Antiques, and the odd thing worth keeping

Alongside the new furniture we always hold a small stock of old pieces, colonial teak, inlay work, salvage and the occasional oddity. The stock changes constantly and there is never more than one of anything, so what is on this page today is genuinely what is in the shop today.

How buying an antique here works

Antiques are not sold through the basket on this site. Every piece is unique, condition matters more than a photograph can carry, and the price depends on what we paid for it, so these are quoted in person or over the phone. Come and see it, or ask us to send you photographs and a video of the piece you are interested in.

The kind of thing we hold

Representative, not a stock list. Call to hear what is in this week.

Colonial almirah, photograph coming soon One of a kind

Colonial-era almirahs

Tall teak wardrobes from the early twentieth century, with the original mirrors where they have survived. Restored only as far as they need, we do not sand the history off a piece.

Inlay chest, photograph coming soon

Brass and bone inlay

Chests, side tables and writing boxes with inlay work of a kind nobody does at this price any more. Each one is the only one we have.

Planter's chair, photograph coming soon

Restored teak seating

Planter's chairs, Bombay armchairs and low daybeds. Frames original, cane and upholstery redone by hand where the old work had gone.

Carved jharokha, photograph coming soon

Carved doors and jharokhas

Rajasthani and Gujarati salvage, carved door frames and window surrounds that people mount as wall pieces or work into a new build.

Campaign trunk, photograph coming soon

Trunks and campaign chests

Iron-bound travelling trunks and brass-cornered campaign furniture, the kind built to be carried and therefore built properly.

Nesting tables, photograph coming soon

Occasional pieces

Nesting tables, plant stands, mirrors, clocks. The things that turn up one at a time and go the same way.

What we will and will not tell you

  1. Age, honestly

Where we know the period we will say so, and where we are estimating we will say that instead. We do not issue certificates of authenticity and we would be wary of anyone in this trade who does.

  2. What has been replaced

Recaned seats, new upholstery, a replaced mirror, a repaired leg, all disclosed before you buy. Restoration is not a fault, but hiding it is.

  3. What it will not do

An eighty-year-old chair is not a new chair. We will tell you what a piece can take daily use for and what it cannot, because a returned antique helps nobody.
